Full Description
THE PASSING OF THE FELLS - NEW WAIRARAPA RAILWAY The story behind the opening of the Rimutaka Tunnel - 5 miles in length and longest tunnel in the British Commonwealth. The film opens at Speedy's Crossing where the Prime Minister is about to cut the tape, then shows phases of the work involved in building the new rail route to the Wairarapa. It moves to Cross Creek to show the last days of the famous Rimutaka Incline and the 77-year-old Fell engines toiling up the 1 in 15 grade. Finally the opening ceremony is shown and the first diesel-hauled trains and railcars using the new tunnel.
