The Waitomo Caves are famous not only for their magnificent stalagmite and stalactite limestone formations but also for the unique glow-worm grotto over an underground river. The caves are illuminated and can be viewed from a boat. The scenery in the Valley of Waitomo is also beautiful and visitors from everywhere come to stay in the nearby hotel. Those from overseas are often specially welcomed by the local Tourist League.
