In Rotorua the old folks' service centre is providing occupation and companionship for the elderly and the handicapped. Three days a week they come together and carry out work for local firms - anything from addressing envelopes to making letterboxes. This scheme, based on an English one, helps the elderly and the not-so-well to feel that they have a place and a useful job in society. RAILWAYS AND PLAYWAYS. 162 ft. For fifty years Christchurch has been wanting a new railway station, and now the foundation stone is laid. In Hamilton a large and new play-area is opened. BUILDING A PORT. 232 ft. The new port at Bluff is expected to become New Zealand's main meat and wool port, and the first major works are being carried out by a French firm. CLUTHA FLOOD. 241 ft. After torrential rains the Clutha River bursts its banks in the worst flood since 19l9. At Roxburgh Hydro the great new dam withstands the surge while six-sevenths of the river's floodwaters hurtle over the spillways in a spectacular show.
