New Zealand was first occupied by a seafaring Polynesian people, the Maori, and later by colonists who came from the British Isles to these islands of the Pacific. Present day New Zealanders of both races share a love of the sea, none live far from it, and all at some time return to the sea for a living or for pleasure.
