Episode 2 Challenge and Crisis Deals with the impact on New Zealand aviation of such world famous fliers as Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, and New Zealanders Sir Francis Chichester and Jean Batten. The decade before World War Two was a golden age for the growth of the Aero clubs and for popular flying, and it also saw the beginning of regular domestic air services. Although the war found New Zealand inadequately prepared with obsolete aircraft, we were rapidly caught up in the world-wide advances in the technology of aviation which it gave rise to.
