Professional Use
Archives New Zealand can provide sections from the National Film Unit collection for use in film, television, DVD, corporate, exhibition and other profit making productions.
We have a set of rules which we ask professional users to respect when accessing the collection for productions. These are used to protect the collection and the context and integrity of the individual records.
- You must agree to our terms and conditions as stated in the permission to broadcast/display application forms.
- You must either order BITC VHS copies of titles and select shots, or come to an Archives New Zealand office and view the BITC VHS’s on site and select shots before putting in an order for broadcast material.
- We do not supply individual sections larger than one minute in duration unless there is a specific reason and we do not supply complete items. We would like you to select your specific shots during the off-line edit which can then be replaced with high quality material during the final on-line.
- We cannot do a quick turn around so please give us as much time to process your orders as possible.
- Do not order private use DVDs for professional productions as we will not be able to identify specific shots if you ask for broadcast copies at a later date and we will not give copyright permission to display or broadcast material from a DVD.
To access the National Film Unit collection search for relevant material on the wiki. A proportion of the collection has through previous professional work been transferred onto Beta SP. If there is a Beta SP copy, its corresponding BITC VHS will be listed in the viewing copies field on the wiki. To order a copy of this tape please down load the order sheet and price list at the bottom of this page. Fill in the order sheet noting your contact details, film title, required format and cost and payment details. Then email or fax the order to our Access Services department. All of our access copies are made to order so the charges are based around the length of time it takes our technicians to create the copy rather than the length of the film. If you wish to view tapes at one of Archives New Zealand’s offices please email the references to Access Services who will ensure the tapes are available at the office you wish to visit.
If there is no BITC VHS listed please contact Access Services who will be able to take you through the process for organising a BITC VHS to be made.
Once you have the time-code sections you wish to use in your production, please email or fax the order sheet to Access Services, including the format you wish to have the material on and payment details. The price list at the bottom of this page outlines the costs.
Applications for display or broadcast of Archives New Zealand material should be made to the Chief Archivist before the release date for the new work. To apply for permission please down load the appropriate form at the bottom of this page, fill out the details and email or fax to Access Services.
Please note we supply material for all media in perpetuity with unlimited territories within the named production on the permission sheet. If you wish to re-use the material in a new production you must re-apply for permission to the Chief Archivist.
