About Our Collection
Archives New Zealand holds around 21,000 reels of film and 1000 videotapes. The majority of these are from the New Zealand National Film Unit which made government funded films from 1942 until 1989.
We also hold many collections of material created or received by many Government departments in the course of their work and ‘Special Collections’ which we keep for their significant historical value under the Public Records Act 2005.
Access references to the main core of the NFU Collection as well as look through lists of often requested subjects.
See the work Archives New Zealand undertakes to preserve its audio visual collection and some of the issues around film and video presentation.
Follow the history of the NFU from the early ‘Tin Shed’ days through to its sale in the 1980s, including the personal histories, rare behind the scenes pictures and biographies of the men and women who worked there.
Our online exhibitions are small features about films, film makers, and the film archiving, and are changed on a semi-regular basis.
